Jimena de la Frontera

The town of Jimena de la Frontera is also in the heart of the “Los Alcornocales” Natural Park.

Here, you get a wonderful view from its castle and can visit the historic area, as well as meeting the wonderful and very hospitable locals.

Jimena de la Frontera was built on the site of the Roman city of Oba. We know this from a series of coins and inscriptions found within the municipality.

Information on its Phoenician origins, other than some coins, is very scarce.

The castle is of Romano-Arabic origin, the first fortifications dating back to the seventh century A.D. It was in the eighth century, when the Arabs took over, that the castle achieved its maximum splendour and usefulness, since for many years it was on the frontier between the Nasrid and Christian territories.

If you’re interested in birds, don’t forget to visit the Parque de las Aves and the Jimena de la Frontera Zoo.
